"MASCOTS" Exhibit at the Freedom Center

The National Underground Railroad Freedom Center

The Freedom Center has partnered with Xavier University to curate an exhibit that addresses the current issues of cultural appropriation of the identity of American Indians in athletics.

In conjunction with the exhibit, a panel was held on November 7, 2015 to discuss the use of stereotypical sports mascots.  The panel featured former Cincinnati Reds Manager Dusty Baker, Northern Cheyenne Tribal Elder Dennis Limberhand, Alex Tortes from the Torres-Martinez Tribe, and Xavier University Clinical Psychologist Dr. Rose Wetterau and was moderated by Rabbi Abie Ingber. Below is a video excerpt of the discussion panel.

The Mascot Discussion Panel was covered by one of NKU's own Anthropology alum, Greg Rust. In his editorial, Opinion: Few hear concerns of other cultures, Greg mentions his personal experience with the Cheyenne and that they are so much more than how they are portrayed.

MASCOTS exhibit is now open through Spring of 2016.
