Katie Ragland on Life, Culture, and Sugar Cane in Belize

After a week of refreshing cold showers, matchless local cuisine, and hard work in the blistering heat of Orange Walk Town, Belize, NKU student and anthropology major Katie Ragland is finding everything she hoped for and more in her field study. Katie arrived in Orange Walk Town in June and has enjoyed living in Belizean culture as an anthropologist and a tourist. Her study group will be researching the vast sugar cane industry in the town through ethnographical interviews, mapping of the local streets and fields, and studying the pests that inhabit the sugar cane fields — a nuisance for farmers.
